November is National Spinach & Pomegranate Month!
November is the perfect month to celebrate these powerhouse foods! Both spinach and pomegranates are packed dense with nutrients and bring a wonderful addition of color to the harvest season.
Spinach
Spinach is packed with antioxidants, making it an excellent source of vitamins and minerals to feed your body. These include vitamins A, C, K, as well as iron and potassium to name a few. Spinach thrives in cooler climates with typical seasons being from early fall to late spring. While there are numerous types of spinach, there are three main varieties that dominate, including Flat Leaf/Smooth Leaf, Savory, and Semi-Savory. Flat Leaf, also referred to as Smooth Leaf spinach, is known to be flat (as the name implies) and tender, making this type ideal for salads. Baby spinach comes from the smaller leaves of Flat Leaf. Since this variety is versatile, it is typically used in canned or frozen spinach. Savory Spinach is one the most popular varieties and is probably the kind you see most in supermarkets. It appears crinkled when raw, but develops a rich flavor once cooked. It is typically used in stir-frys, soups, and roasts. Semi-Savory spinach is a mix between the two and can be enjoyed raw or cooked!
Pomegranates
Pomegranates have been a cultural staple throughout history, from the Middle East, to the Mediterranean, to parts of the southern United States. These plentiful fruits are seen as a symbol of abundance and good fortune. They are rich in vitamins C and K, as well as fiber and potassium. The most common variety of pomegranates in the United States and the one you see most often is called the Wonderful variety in most grocery stores. They have a striking dark-red exterior and hundreds of seeds inside known as arils. They are often larger than an apple and have a tangy but semi-sweet taste. Their seeds are often used in salads, yogurt, juices, oats, and couscous-based dishes.
Although not traditionally eaten together, spinach and pomegranates make a beautiful pair. Whether they are added to salads, enjoyed in a stir-fry, or blended together, spinach and pomegranate are staple superfoods that can be added to your recipes this season!
